Police in Berkeley arrested a registered sex offender early this morning for an alleged attack on a woman Monday. UC police said the attack happened on the University of California Berkeley campus on Monday at around 9:30 p.m. The woman, a 25-year-old student, told police she was walking east in the 2600 block of Dwight Way when a man began yelling at her, crossed the street, grabbed her crotch, then ran toward People’s Park.
Based on her description of the man, UC police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Roger Lopez. They detained him that night, but because the student couldn’t positively identify him as the suspect, he was not arrested. However, based on statements made by Lopez the night he was detained, they came to believe he was the suspect.
He was arrested this morning around 2 a.m. near Bancroft Way and Ellsworth Street. According to police, Lopez has an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault, and is also an out-of-compliance sex offender with an extensive criminal history.
