A 46-year-old transient was arrested Thursday in the robbery and assault of a bicyclist who was attacked while pedaling on a bike trail on East Bayshore Road in Palo Alto, police said today.
Roberto Navarro was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of felony robbery and misdemeanor assault and battery, according to police Agent Marianna Villaescusa.
Police were called at 9:39 a.m. Thursday about people fighting on a bike trail in the 3500 block of East Bayshore Road, Villaescusa said.
A witness reported that a robbery suspect had fled on foot heading south on East Bayshore and at 9:44 a.m. officers located and detained the suspect, police said.
During an investigation, witnesses told officers that a man in his 50s was riding a bicycle northbound on the bike trail on East Bayshore when a man walking in the opposite direction pulled the victim off of the bike.
The suspect then repeatedly punched the man in the arms, kicked him in the lower body and head, grabbed the victim’s cell phone and fled down the bike trail with it.
Two passersby went to aid the fallen man and flagged down a motorist, who called police and kept watch on the suspect until officers arrived to make the arrest.
The bicyclist had bruises on his feet and abrasions on one of his hands and was treated at the scene by medical personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department.
Police took the stolen cell phone from the suspect and returned it to the bicyclist, police said.
