A 52-year-old Oakland man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, hit-and-run and resisting arrest after being involved in an accident in San Leandro at about 3:15 p.m. today, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Doolittle Drive at about 3:12 p.m. to investigate a possible vehicle theft but after they arrived there a vehicle fled from the area, according to police.

Moments later, other officers found the car on Orchard Avenue near Harlan Street, where the car had collided with another vehicle and was abandoned, police said.

Officers found the suspect, Ronald Forbes, trying to flee the scene and he was taken into custody with the assistance of a police canine, police said.

No one was injured in the accident and it appears that no one was in the car that Forbes crashed into, Lt. Russell Brandt said.

Further investigation determined the car Forbes had been driving had been stolen earlier in the day in San Leandro, according to police.

In addition, investigators found some containers inside the car suspected that they might be hazardous materials so people who lived in the area of Orchard Avenue and Harlan Street were advised to shelter in place until the materials could be analyzed, police said.

The Alameda County Fire Department’s HazMat team was called to the scene but determined that the containers were empty and didn’t contain any hazardous materials, fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

San Leandro police then released its security detail from the scene and called off the shelter-in-place advisory, authorities said.
