A 35-year-old known gang member was wounded twice in a shooting Sunday night after a group confronted him about his gang affiliation in Salinas, police said.

Salinas police were notified of a shooting at 10:45 p.m. Sunday in a residential area close to the intersection of Mae Avenue and D Street, according to police Cmdr. Henry Gomez.

Officers located the victim, who had gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg, police said.

A group of males had approached the victim, asked him about his gang membership and then one of the suspects shot him, according to Gomez.

The wounded man was transported to a Bay Area hospital and is expected to recover.

The suspected shooter is described as a Hispanic male wearing a checkered shirt and dark pants, Gomez said.
