Portland Police Officer Jeff Dorn, a 16-year-veteran of the Bureau, is in the hospital and his canine partner, “Mick,” suffered fatal injuries after an early morning shoot-out Wednesday. The suspect is in custody.

Portland Police Chief Mike Reese said the incident began with a break-in and burglary at Blumenthal Uniform Supply Store in southwest Portland. Police interrupted the burglary, but the suspects escaped and drove away.

After being chased by police, the suspects crashed their car at SW Capitol Highway and Dolph Court around 3 a.m., police said.

An armed man ran from the scene and began firing when a K-9 officer released his dog. The suspect shot at both the officer and the dog, then disappeared but was later found dead from gunshot wounds.

The two other suspects were detained at the scene.
