Two suspects in a gang-related assault were arrested during a traffic stop Wednesday morning, Santa Rosa police said. Anthony David Johns, 21, and Luis Antonio Joaquin Vargas, 19, both of Santa Rosa, are suspected of stabbing a 22-year-old Santa Rosa man in the torso at North Park on North Street in Santa Rosa on Sunday night, Sgt. David Linscomb said. During an argument, one suspect stabbed the victim and the other used a stun gun before they fled in a vehicle, Linscomb said.

The California Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle similar to the suspects’ vehicle on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Todd Road and detained two female occupants, Linscomb said. One of the females had an electronic weapon similar to the one used in the assault, and detectives identified two male associates of the females as suspects, Linscomb said.

Johns and Vargas were spotted around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in a vehicle on Stony Point Road near state Highway 12 and were arrested, Linscomb said. Johns and Vargas are believed to have local gang ties, and both were booked in the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements. The assault victim was treated at a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening and is not known to be associated with a gang, Linscomb said. His name is not being released because of concerns for his safety, Linscomb said.
