A Salinas resident shot and critically wounded a man who had walked across his property and entered his garage early Monday, according to a police commander.
The male resident, who is not being identified, fired one shot that struck the suspect, 27-year-old Ray Espino, who was transported to a Bay Area hospital in critical condition, Salinas police Cmdr. Vincent Maiorana said.
At about 4:20 a.m. Monday, police responded to a call at a home in the 700 block of Leese Drive on a report that a resident had shot a burglary suspect.
The resident told officers he picked up a firearm for his personal safety after he was awakened by suspicious noises coming from the front of his property and observed someone walking outside.
He went into his garage to investigate further, became frightened when he observed Espino inside the garage and, fearing for his safety, fired one shot at the intruder, police said.
The incident is still being investigated and anyone with information about it is urged to call the Salinas Police Department’s investigations bureau at (831) 758-7226.
