Tucson Police Press Release

On April 11, 2014, at approximately 7:30p.m., officers were preparing to serve a weapons related search warrant on an apartment in the 2600 block of North 14th Avenue. Before officers got to the door, an individual exited the residence. That individual is believed to be involved in multiple incidents involving narcotics and weapons offenses. Officers attempted to make contact with the individual, but he fled on foot into the complex. As officers pursued the subject, a confrontation ensued and multiple gunshots were exchanged between the subject and officers. The subject was struck several times and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The officers were not injured during the incident.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit, Night Detectives Unit, Gang Unit and the Office of Internal Affairs responded to continue the investigation. As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.

The subject involved has been identified as 36-year old Michael Castillo. A previous booking photo of Mr. Castillo is attached below. Detectives are still in the initial stages of this investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
