Hayward police say they cited 178 people Thursday night in a crackdown on street racing.

“Operation No More Street Racing,” conducted around 11 p.m. Thursday night on Connecticut Street, stopped at least 100 cars and more than 200 spectators and issued 178 citations, according to Sgt. Mark Ormsby.

Illegal street racing tends to increase as the weather starts to warm up, Ormsby said.

It is illegal to participate in street racing or to act as a spectator, Ormsby said.
