Police arrested a 36-year-old man who allegedly brandished a fake handgun while shoplifting from the Safeway at 1499 Washington Ave. on Wednesday night. Police responded to a call at 9:34 p.m. reporting that a man had brandished a handgun and threatened an employee when confronted about shoplifting items from a store display, according to San Leandro police Lt. Richard DeCosta.
The man lifted his shirt and exposed what appeared to be a handgun when the employee confronted him about taking items from the store, according to the employee. The employee backed away, and the suspect then fled the store on his bike, DeCosta said. Employees gave police a description of the suspect’s appearance and clothing, DeCosta said. Minutes later, officers spotted and detained a suspect matching the description. The suspect, later identified as Luke Vickery, an Oakland resident, had a fake handgun in his possession, DeCosta said. Vickery was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.
