Five people were injured in Salinas on Saturday in four separate shootings, at least three of which are considered gang-related, police said. The first of the shootings was reported at 9:14 a.m. Saturday, when Salinas police were dispatched to the area of South Sanborn Road and Fairview Avenue just east of U.S. Highway 101. A male victim was found there with a single gunshot wound and was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where he was reported in stable condition, police said. Witnesses provided police with descriptions of three suspects who ran from the area after the shooting.

After a search, officers located and captured three teenage boys. The juveniles, two 14-year-olds and a 17-year-old, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. All three are suspected gang members and police are investigating the shooting as gang-related.

Another suspected gang-related shooting occurred later that day at 2:24 p.m. A citizen reported being inside a garage with two others in the 1300 block of Cachuma Court near Freedom Parkway when two unknown Hispanic males walked in, police said. One of the intruders challenged the victim and immediately started firing shots. The victim and the two suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

A witness told police that the victim had been wounded but officers were unable to locate any shooting victims at local hospitals. At 3:38 p.m., Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital notified police about a wounded male that officers at first thought might be the person who was shot earlier on Cachuma Court.

The victim, suffering from a bullet wound to the lower torso that was not life-threatening, told police he was not a gang member and that he had been shot at another location, Paseo Grande and Towt Street, about three blocks northwest of Cachuma. The victim said he heard several gunshots, realized he had been shot, went to a friend’s house and was transported to the hospital, according to police.

At 9:55 p.m. Saturday, the third suspected gang-related shooting of the day was reported in the 1100 block of Atlantic Street, police said. Three people were watching television in a garage with the garage door partially open when two suspects reached under the door and fired multiple rounds at them, police said. A female was wounded in the right ankle and a male was hit in his right foot and right forearm while the third person was not injured. The two wounded victims were taken to Natividad Medical Center, police said.
