An elementary school in San Francisco’s Bayview District is on lockdown this afternoon because of a nearby shooting, a police spokesman said.

The shooting was reported around 1:40 p.m. on Hawes Street near Gilman Avenue.

Students, teachers and staff at Bret Harte Elementary School, located at 1035 Gilman Ave., were ordered to shelter in place once the shooting was reported, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

One person was found with a gunshot wound and transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Esparza said.

Police were still searching for the suspect as of 2:10 p.m. and the school remained on lockdown, Esparza said.

San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman Heidi Anderson said all of the children are safe and district employees are working closely with police.

The school will reopen when police give the “all-clear,” she said.
