Police arrested a man who led an officer on a high-speed chase in a stolen car and broke into a home while hiding from officers in Salinas on Monday afternoon, a police commander said. An officer saw a stolen car at Bolero Street and East Laurel Drive shortly after noon, Cmdr. Sheldon Bryan said. The car was stolen out of San Jose, according to Bryan.

The driver of the vehicle led the officer on a short pursuit and was driving erratically, he said. The officer canceled the pursuit as the stolen vehicle entered a shopping center parking lot because the suspect was driving at high speeds and threatened public safety, Bryan said. Shortly after the pursuit ended, the police dispatch center received a report of a car that struck a curb at Rosarita Drive and St. Francis Way, according to Bryan.

Two people were seen running out of the vehicle, he said. After searching the area police arrested 20-year-old Orlando Gonzales Perez, Bryan said. Officers learned that Perez broke into a residence in the 30 block of St. Francis Way while hiding from police, according to Bryan. Perez stole clothes from the home in an attempt to conceal his identity and tried to flee through the back of the residence where he was caught, Bryan said. Perez’s passenger was also located and later released, police said. Officers found a small amount of narcotics in the stolen vehicle, Bryan said.
