San Leandro police are warning the public to be on alert for a possible scam artist. The warning comes after an incident on Tuesday in which a man flagged down a big-rig in the area of Farallon and Doolittle drives, and informed the driver that his truck was sending out excessive amounts of smoke. According to police, when the driver went to inspect his truck’s engine, the suspect stole a cellphone out of the truck and fled.

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man, between 25 and 30, around 5 feet 10 inches tall driving a small, gray compact car. A similar scam may have been used to rob other drivers. Police Lt. Randall Brandt warned citizens “to be suspicious of people who try to engage them in conversations for no apparent reason.”
