A 41-year-old man was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on Wednesday on suspicion of a felony hit-and-run accident that badly injured an 80-year-old man in Milpitas on March 16, Milpitas police said. Police arrested Michael Jerry Maestas, of San Jose, on suspicion of felony hit-and-run Wednesday in an automobile versus pedestrian collision at the intersection of South Park Victoria and Canon drives, police Sgt. Ray Maharaj said.
On March 16 at 8:46 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian hit at the intersection and found the 80-year-old male victim, who at first was unresponsive, Maharaj said. The man was transported to a hospital where he was reported in critical condition but survived, according to police.
Witnesses told officers they saw a gold-colored Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck drive away from the accident scene on South Park Victoria. From an investigation by traffic officers, police were able to identify Maestas as the suspected driver of a 2001 Toyota Tundra extra cab pickup truck involved in the accident, Maharaj said.
