A Salinas man was found guilty of felony theft for stealing from his roommates in Monterey County on Wednesday, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. Steven George Bunker, 26, had moved into a Salinas residence renting a room from two co-tenants around March 1 and moved out several weeks later, Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo said.
As the tenants were cleaning out Bunker’s room they found their own possessions including several old cellphones, a box to a valuable necklace and a box to a Motorola Droid smartphone, Flippo said. The necklaces, Droid smartphone and other electronics were missing, according to the district attorney. Bunker’s petty theft charge was upgraded to a felony because he had three prior felony theft convictions, which could add three years to his sentence, the district attorney said. He will be sentenced on April 17 and faces up to six years in local custody.
