Fairfield police arrested two men Thursday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter in connection with the death of a driver during an illegal speeding contest last month. Investigators believe Lawan Lee Harper, 24, and Ansheel Anosh Kumar, 19, were racing between stoplights on eastbound Airbase Parkway at 100 mph on Feb. 25 when Kumar’s 2003 Nissan 350Z struck the passenger side of a 1994 Cadillac, Sgt. Matt Bloesch said.

The collision killed the Cadillac driver, 28-year-old Quincy Jones of Vacaville. Jones was driving west on Airbase Parkway and trying to turn left across the eastbound lanes onto Wiley Road when Kumar’s eastbound Nissan struck the passenger side of Jones’ car at the intersection, Bloesch said. Kumar was injured in the crash, Bloesch said.

Harper and Kumar were booked in the Solano County jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, reckless driving and engaging in a speeding contest, Bloesch said. Bloesch said cooperative witnesses to the crash led to the two men’s arrests.
