Albuquerque Police K-9 Dog “Rico” Shot in the Line of Duty

An Albuquerque police K9 is in surgery after being shot, multiple times by a suspect. It happened during a SWAT standoff in northeast Albuquerque near San Pedro and Oakland.

Officer went out there at about 2:45 a.m. to respond to reports of a burglary in progress. They found a man in the yard of a business.

They say when the man saw officers approach, he ran toward a storage container and barricaded himself inside. At one point he fired shots, shooting the K9 officer named Rico.

Police say Rico was rushed into surgery after the incident. Rico has since been released from surgery but has suffered massive trauma. His handler is by his side.

Police say the suspect was later found dead.
