Three police officers shot and killed an armed male suspect in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant at a major intersection in Salinas early this morning, according to a police commander. Salinas police received a call at 2:07 a.m. today about a suspicious person with a gun in the parking lot outside the Wing Stop eatery at 1488 Constitution Blvd. at Independence Boulevard, police Cmdr. Vincent Maiorana said.
Three officers arrived at the scene and challenged the male suspect, who then lifted his sweatshirt and brandished a handgun at them, according to Maiorana. The officers, fearing he was going to shoot them, then opened fire, striking and killing the suspect, Maiorana said.
No officers or others were injured in the incident, police said. The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of family members and the three officers are on paid administrative leave while police investigate the shooting, Maiorana said. Salinas police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to contact the department at (831) 758-7226.
