An alleged gang member was arrested in Richmond on Monday after police spotted him carrying loaded gun, a police spokeswoman said today.
A couple of detectives from the Richmond Police Department’s gang unit were on patrol in the 100 block of Nevin Avenue around 3:10 p.m. when they spotted alleged gang member Shamar Desmond, 29, and saw him trying to hide a gun in his waistband, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
The detectives detained Desmond and found that he had a .45-caliber handgun in his waistband, she said.
He was arrested on suspicion of felony gun possession and gang enhancements and taken to county jail in Martinez.
Abetkov said gang detectives like those who made the arrest are increasing patrols in an effort to prevent possible retaliatory shootings after recent gang-related homicides in North Richmond.
Gang unit detectives arrested an alleged North Richmond gang member last week in Central Richmond, where he and another man were believed to be plotting a shooting, according to police.
