The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man suspected of firing gunshots during a funeral in Salinas on Wednesday afternoon. Deputies responded to a report of a man discharging a firearm during a funeral at Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 18200 Damian Way shortly after 1 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Arriving deputies learned that the man had left the scene in a white 2014 Chevrolet Silverado that was later located in the 800 block of Rogge Road, deputies said.

The immediate surrounding area was blocked off for deputies to locate the suspect and prompted lockdowns at Bolsa Knolls Middle School and La Joya Elementary School, according to the sheriff’s office. The suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Leovardo Campos Edeza of Salinas, was found and taken into custody, deputies said. The firearm, a GLOCK model 19 pistol, was located in a house on Rogge Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Edeza was also arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine.
