Police have identified a man who died in a crash in San Leandro on Saturday night as the cousin of the driver who was arrested for DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter following the collision, according to police.
Officers responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Castro Street at around 11:20 p.m., according to San Leandro police.
Arriving officers found an Acura Integra and a Chevrolet Camaro that had crashed in the intersection.
Both the driver and a passenger in the Acura were seriously injured and taken to a hospital.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital and has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 30-year-old Juan Jesus Ornelas Flores, of Oakland.
The driver of the Acura was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and has been identified as 24-year-old Oakland resident Sergio Hernandez Flores.
Police arrested him for gross vehicular manslaughter and he remains in police custody at a local hospital, where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the collision.
It is reported that the two men were cousins, police said.
The driver and only occupant of the Chevy Camaro has been identified as a 44-year-old San Lorenzo man. He was not injured in the collision, according to police.
Police are still investigating the cause of the collision, and believe that excessive speed and excessive alcohol consumption by the driver of the Acura are to blame.
The arrested driver will be transported to the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
