A Santa Rosa man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Rohnert Park on Friday night was arrested after fleeing the scene of a crash that left his passenger dead, police said today. Police said 23-year-old Rafael Prieto-Gonzalez was driving at high speeds on Commerce Boulevard between Alison Avenue and Arlen Drive when he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree, according to police.
His passenger, a man who is believed to be in his 40s, was killed. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives. Two witnesses to the crash told officers arriving on the scene that the driver screamed for help but then ran from the scene after they tried to assist him, according to police. Officers set up a perimeter and searched the area for the suspect.
A short time later, officers found Prieto-Gonzalez, who was suffering from injuries consistent with the crash, police said. Police suspect he was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash. He was taken to a hospital for a medical clearance and booked into county jail in Santa Rosa on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run and a probation violation.
