A body that was found burning at the entrance to Redwood Regional Park in Oakland on Saturday night is believed to be that of a white woman in her mid- to late 40s, a police sergeant said today.

Oakland police and firefighters responded to a report of a body on fire at the Skyline Boulevard entrance to the park around 10:30 p.m., Sgt. Dave Hall said. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

East Bay Regional Park District police also responded, he said.

It was determined that the crime occurred in the East Bay Regional Park District’s jurisdiction and park detectives are investigating the case.

The case remains an active homicide investigation, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility that it was a suicide, Sgt. Tyrone Davis said today.

“We have not found anything to indicate foul play,” Davis said.

The coroner’s office is still working to determine the woman’s identity.
