Milpitas police arrested a man on Wednesday afternoon wanted for a Walmart store burglary that occurred on Monday, a police sergeant said. Officers searched the 100 block of Ranch Drive for the suspect, later identified as 50-year-old Brian Schmidt, around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sgt. Bryan Hinkley said. Schmidt, a transient from Santa Clara, was wanted for shoplifting at a Walmart store located at 301 Ranch Drive on Monday, Hinkley said.

When officers tried to contact Schmidt he ran and hid in a dense bush, he said. Officers set up a perimeter and a police canine eventually found Schmidt who had to be subdued by several officers before he was arrested, Hinkley said. He was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for resisting arrest, probation violation, possession of stolen property, theft with prior convictions and a warrant.
