A privately hired security guard in Oakland’s Oakmore neighborhood shot a suspected burglar late this morning, according to police. Around 11:55 a.m., police responded to the 4000 block of Waterhouse Road on a report of a shooting, police said. Officers found a man there suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, police said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that a security guard confronted a suspect who was attempting to burglarize a home, police said. The suspect allegedly threatened the guard with an edged weapon, prompting the shooting, according to the account the security guard gave to police.
Investigators found a screwdriver at the scene, police said. The incident remains under investigation. The security guard is reported to be an employee of Security Code 3, a company with offices in San Jose and Oakland. A person answering the phone at the San Jose office this afternoon declined to comment on the incident. According to its website, the company provides armed and unarmed guards for hire.
