An alleged gang member was arrested Tuesday after fleeing the scene of a fight near Watsonville High School and tossing a handgun while he ran from officers, police said. Police responded to a report of a fight involving weapons near the school, located at 250 E. Beach St., at about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses told the officers that the people fighting may have been gang members, and a school employee directed them to nearby Brockius Street, according to police.

The officers spotted two men in the 100 block of Grant Street, about a block away, and an officer attempted to detain one of the suspects but he ran toward a home and tossed an object into the backyard, police said. That suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Gustavo Chavez, was arrested a short time later, and officers recovered a loaded handgun from the yard, police said. Chavez was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at (831) 728-3544.
