Police are trying to find a man who shot and injured an elderly woman during a possible home invasion robbery in Oakland’s Upper Dimond neighborhood this morning.
The 81-year-old woman was home alone in the 4100 block of Laguna Avenue around 10:30 a.m. when a man forced entry into the home and ended up shooting her, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.
The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries and was in stable condition, the spokeswoman said.
The suspect fled after the shooting and has not been located. It is not yet clear whether he took anything from the home, police said.
Watson said he is described as a black man in his 20s who is about 6 feet tall and weighs roughly 175 pounds. He was wearing all dark clothing and is armed with a gun, she said.
She said this morning’s incident is the first home invasion robbery reported in a long time in the typically quiet neighborhood, which is several blocks downhill from the Mormon temple.
There are at least two elementary schools in the area, but an Oakland Unified School District spokesman said he was not aware of any lockdowns.
