A Monterey County Jail inmate in custody on child molestation charges died of pneumonia and respiratory failure at a Monterey County hospital last week, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Inmate David Stevens, 58, had been in custody for felony child molestation charges since August 2013. He was transported to Natividad Medical Center after he expressed having difficulty breathing and excessive coughing on Jan. 12, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Jan. 20 at around 5:20 a.m., Stevens died “of natural causes,” according to the coroner’s office.
Stevens suffered pneumonia in both lungs, among other “significant conditions” including rheumatoid arthritis, kidney failure, and respiratory distress syndrome, according to the coroner’s report.
A screening for flu was conducted during the autopsy and “no influenza viruses were detected,” the statement said.
