A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot by her younger brother at their apartment in Oakland’s Chinatown today, according to their cousin.
Marianna Gaston, 22, of Oakland said the girl who was fatally shot at the apartment complex at 801 Franklin St. at about 12:15 p.m. today was Justice Toliver and the person who shot Justice was her brother, who she said is 14 or 15 years old.
Gaston said she had been told the boy was mad at his sister for bleaching her clothes.
When she first heard about the shooting, Gaston said she thought it was “a joke” and asked, “Why would he kill her over that?”
Standing outside the 12-story apartment building several hours after the shooting, Gaston said, “Nothing makes sense. It doesn’t add up.”
Oakland police haven’t confirmed the name of the victim or the suspect in the shooting.
Police said they received a call at 12:17 p.m. reporting the shooting and when officers responded they found a female who was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Paramedics were summoned to the scene but the female was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police said a preliminary investigation has determined that the person who shot the female is a family member but they didn’t release the suspect’s name or say if the suspect has been arrested.
Police also said they haven’t yet determined the motive for the shooting.
Many people were still gathered outside the apartment building shortly before 5 p.m. today. One woman said she was the cousin of the female who was killed but said she was too distraught about the shooting to talk about it.
A large group of police officers were still at the scene and an Alameda County Coroner’s van was at the site to claim the victim’s body.
Oakland police said their investigation into the shooting is ongoing and anyone with information about it should call their homicide section at (510) 238-3821.
