Police in Santa Cruz arrested a man Monday on suspicion of possessing child pornography after finding many images in his home of children as young as toddler age engaged in sexual activity.

Santa Cruz police are investigating whether the suspect, Christopher Schuette, 30, of Santa Cruz, had worked in the childcare industry or had contact with children locally and in other states, Deputy Chief Steve Clark said.

Police detectives received several tips online about suspicious activity on the Internet and used sophisticated software to track down the source and obtain a warrant to search Schuette’s home in the 500 block of Carbonera Drive, Clark said.

Inside the suspect’s residence, police found multiple USB computer drives containing thousands of digital images of child pornography, with many victims of toddler age photographed engaging in sex, according to Clark.

Detectives discovered printed images of child pornography in the home in addition to the digital photos, Clark said.

Schuette allegedly had been uploading some pornographic photo files onto the Internet and police are investigating whether he was trying to offer the images for sale, according to police.

Officers arrested Schuette on felony possession of child pornography and booked him into the Santa Cruz County Jail, police said.

Santa Cruz police worked on the investigation with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Silicon Valley Crimes Against Children Taskforce, Clark said.
