A man who allegedly beat a victim with a baseball bat in Santa Clara was arrested this afternoon after leading officers on a brief chase, a police lieutenant said.

The assault was reported in the 2100 block of Main Street, where a victim reported being assaulted with a baseball bat by a man who also vandalized the victim’s vehicle, according to Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke.

Officers then spotted the suspect at about 3 p.m. and he took off running with police in pursuit. The chase prompted the brief lockdown of Scott Lane Elementary School at 1925 Scott Blvd., according to Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke.

Clarke said school had already let out for the day.

Officers located and arrested the suspect a short time later hiding in a backyard. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Anthony Piccollo of San Jose, was taken into custody.

The assault victim’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Clarke said.
