A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of having a loaded Winchester rifle and drugs in Watsonville Wednesday night, a Watsonville police sergeant said. Police responded at 11:48 p.m. to a report of a person with a gun at a Quik Stop convenience store parking lot in the 2100 block of Freedom Boulevard, Watsonville police Sgt. Michael Ridgway said.
Arriving officers found three people, a man and two females, sitting in a parked car in the parking lot and detained them at gunpoint, Ridgway said. Upon searching the vehicle, a loaded .308-caliber Winchester rifle was allegedly found in the back seat, he said. Police arrested Jose Lopez, of Watsonville, for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of methamphetamine, Ridgway said.
Officers also arrested Daisey Leonor, 24, of Freedom, on suspicion of possession of a shaved key and a parole violation, he said. A shaved key is a common tool used in car thefts where the sides of the key are filed down to fit in multiple vehicles, according to police. Lopez ended up in the parking lot after he asked an acquaintance for a ride so he could allegedly shoot his rifle somewhere, according to Ridgway. The driver pulled over at the Quik Stop parking lot after learning Lopez was armed and called 911, Ridgway said.
