An auto theft suspect was arrested after he tried to run away from the scene of a traffic accident in San Leandro Monday afternoon, police said. The collision was reported at about 3:30 p.m. when a white vehicle speeding down Estudillo Avenue lost control and crashed into an unoccupied parked car near the main library, police said. The driver ran away from the scene toward San Leandro Creek, where police lost sight of him.
Officers set up a perimeter and eventually spotted the suspect walking. As an officer approached the suspect, he ran away again, but this time was caught as he tried to flee back to the creek, police said. The car he had crashed was determined to have been stolen and he was arrested. No one was injured in the collision.
