Investigators are trying to identify a man who attacked a 19-year-old woman near Lake Merritt in Oakland the night of Jan. 1, police said today. Oakland police said the woman was approached by a male stranger who appeared from between two parked cars while she was walking in the 200 block of 17th Street, near Jackson Street, at about 8:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Police said the man grabbed the woman by wrapping both of his arms around her, told her that he had a gun and began dragging her down the sidewalk. The woman and the suspect both fell to the ground, which caused him to release her and she was able run away, police said. The man fled before police arrived.

The suspect in described as a black man in his mid-20s to early 30 who is about 5 feet 7 inches or 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has a medium complexion. Police said he was wearing dark pants and a gray hooded parka that covered his head. They also said the suspect smelled strongly of cigarettes.
