A Monterey County man reported missing last Wednesday was found dead inside his car Saturday on an embankment near U.S. Highway 101 in San Benito County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The man, a 68-year-old resident of the Aromas area who is not being identified, was dead when the CHP located his car at 11:25 a.m. Saturday off of the eastbound side of state Route 156 west of Merrill Road, the CHP said.
The man’s 1991 Honda apparently ran off of the right shoulder of the state route, just north of 101, into a steep dirt and brush embankment and rolled over twice before landing on its wheels, the CHP reported. The driver sustained fatal injuries, even though he was wearing his safety restraints, the CHP said.
Investigators do not know when the accident occurred or whether drugs or alcohol were factors, the CHP said. The man, whose name is being withheld until his family members are notified of his death, had been reported missing since New Year’s Day, the CHP said.
