A man has been charged with murdering a Vallejo man following a fight over a pool game at an Antioch bowling alley and is set to appear in court on the charges next week, a prosecutor said today. Andre Woods, 24, of Pittsburg, was charged late last month with murder for the killing of 41-year-old Kelvin Smith at the Delta Bowl bowling alley on Dec. 20, according to Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Mary Knox. Knox said the defendant and victim had never met but both happened to be at the bowling alley located at 3300 Delta Fair Blvd. that evening. A short time before 6 p.m., Woods was losing a game of pool he was playing with a woman and Smith apparently began teasing him for it, the prosecutor said.
The taunts led to a shoving match between the two men, who then separated. Woods then grabbed a barstool and struck the victim with it, knocking him to the ground, then grabbed a second stool and used it to beat him in the head and face, Knox said. The 24-year-old fled the scene, and police arrived on the scene a short time later to find Smith unresponsive.
He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police said Woods turned himself in hours after the killing and was taken into custody. He is set to appear in Contra Costa County Superior Court on Thursday for further arraignment.
