A documented gang member on probation was arrested in Watsonville early this morning on suspicion of car theft after a citizen reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in their neighborhood, police said. At 2:43 a.m., the citizen phoned police to report that a male in a beanie cap and driving a white car was circling in the area of Vista Point Drive, according to Watsonville police.
An officer responded to the neighborhood, spotted the car and after running its license plate number, found out it had been reported stolen, police said. The officer pursued the automobile to the 100 block of Sixth Street and saw the suspect car pull into an alley and stop, according to police. The officer then held the suspect at gunpoint until other officers arrived, police said.
The suspect, identified as Jose Luis Ortegon, 34, a documented gang member who was on probation, was arrested on suspicion of car theft, receiving stolen property and violating his probation. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, police said.
