Two men were arrested Sunday in the burglary of a sporting goods store in Scotts Valley after police officers observed them loading stolen property into a vehicle, according to police. Saul Eduardo Ascencio Mendez, 22, and Julio Yaer Cortes, 22, both of San Jose, were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail after their arrests on suspicion of burglary, possession of burglary tools and vandalism, police said. Scotts Valley police responded at 11:15 p.m. Sunday to a silent burglary alarm from the Easton-Bell Sports store at 5550 Scotts Valley Road and observed a vehicle at the store’s rear loading dock.
The back door to the business had been smashed in and Mendez and Cortes were seen loading property from the store into the vehicle, police said. After gaining entry through the smashed door, the suspects took a majority of the property from employee offices and desks, police said. Officers found laptop computers, large screen monitors and sports equipment belonging to Easton-Bell in the vehicle, police said. Both men were taken into custody without incident, police said.
