Police have arrested three suspects in the gang-related drive-by shooting death of a 24-year-old man who was gunned down as he rode his bicycle near a Walmart store in Salinas on Saturday morning, police said today. At about 11:26 a.m. that day, police responded to a report of a shooting victim on Boronda Road near McKinnon Street and found Eduardo Guijosa lying wounded on the ground, police said. Emergency responders transported Guijosa by ambulance to a hospital where he died, police said.

Officers soon learned that Guijosa had been riding his bicycle on Boronda when three men in a vehicle — believed to be Antonio Lopez, Alejandro Saldana and Richard Vasquez, all 22 years old — spotted him, police said. The three suspects allegedly drove by and parked the vehicle to wait for Guijosa to ride by them, according to police. After the victim passed them, according to police, Saldana and Vasquez allegedly got out and shot him while Lopez remained inside the parked vehicle. Police said the two men then re-entered the vehicle and Lopez drove them away from the scene. Investigators received a description of the vehicle and radioed it to patrol officers, police said.

A short time later, a Salinas police officer saw the vehicle and the three men inside it on West Curtis Street and ordered the driver to pull over, police said. The suspects were taken into custody without incident. Lopez, Saldana and Vasquez were arrested on suspicion of murder and participating in a criminal street gang, and were booked into Monterey County Jail, police said.
