An alleged Norteno gang member and another man were arrested early Sunday morning after attempting to flee from deputies during a traffic stop in Monterey County, deputies said. Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a white 1997 Toyota Yaris for an equipment violation shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday in an unincorporated area near King City. The driver of the vehicle, Fernando Blanco, 24, of King City, came to a stop at the entrance of the Pine Canyon Trailer Park, located at 51201 Pine Canyon Road, according to deputies.

A rear passenger, later identified as suspected Norteno gang member Anthony Rios, 21, of Greenfield, fled the vehicle on foot, deputies said. While deputies pursued Rios on foot, Blanco also fled the scene in the vehicle, deputies said. Rios was captured by deputies and arrested. Deputies responding to the scene stopped the fleeing vehicle and arrested Blanco, who had a warrant for his arrest and appeared to be intoxicated.

Deputies said Blanco later failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, driving on a suspended license, and for being in violation of the terms of his probation, deputies said. A subsequent probation search of Rios’ residence located prohibited weapons, gang paraphernalia, prohibited ammunition, 5.9 grams of marijuana, and a methamphetamine smoking pipe, according to deputies.
