Investigation Underway for Officer-Involved Shooting in Modesto

The Modesto Police Department, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 1700 Block of Vernon Avenue.

This afternoon at about 2:20 PM, Modesto Police Officers contacted two subjects who were loitering behind a business near the intersection of Vernon Ave and Paradise Rd. Upon initial contact with the officers, one of the subjects fled the area on foot. One officer gave chase of the subject who was armed with a firearm. The officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject once. The subject’s wounds are non-life threatening.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard with all officer involved shootings.

Three separate and independent investigations have been launched into this incident, which is standard protocol for any officer-involved shooting investigation in Stanislaus County. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department will be leading the investigation into this incident, as the shooting occurred in their jurisdiction.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s office will be conducting an independent review of the incident. The Modesto Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will be conducting an administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No officers were injured during this incident. The case is under investigation and no further details are available for release at this time.
