Mexican police report that carjackers stole a truck loaded with a shipment of radioactive Cobalt-60 in the drivers were jumped by two gunmen who beat them and stole the truck, said Mardonio Jimenez, a physicist and high-ranking official with Mexico’s nuclear safety commission.
The theft raises fears in the international community that material for a nuclear dirty bomb can be stolen so easily and threaten the world. The truck was found by police but the carjackers escaped and are probably doomed and will probably die soon from exposure according to a scientist. The surrounding area has been cordoned off and Mexico may call for another country to help with special equipment designed to handle radioactive material and test civilians for radiation contamination. Update: Officials now report that no public health risk remained.
