A 26-year-old man was arrested in Richmond on Friday night after allegedly evading police and crashing into a car, injuring three people, a police lieutenant said. Around 9:10 p.m. an officer spotted a stolen car being driven near the intersection of 20th Street and Esmond Avenue, police Lt. Joey Schlemmer said. The officer tried to stop the car — a Honda Accord registered as stolen from Berkeley — but the driver sped away, he said.

The officer gave chase but stopped the pursuit a short time later in the interest of public safety. A short time later, the stolen car was speeding near Barrett Avenue and Third Street when it plowed into another car, Schlemmer said. The driver exited the car and ran from the scene, leaving behind two passengers who suffered moderate injuries in the crash and the driver of the second car, who suffered minor injuries, the lieutenant said. All three were taken to hospitals to be treated for their injuries, and officers found the suspect a short time later. The man was arrested on suspicion of evading police and possession of a stolen vehicle and booked into county jail in Martinez.
