Benicia police said a 64-year-old woman fought off an attempted rapist in her home late Thursday night. The woman said she had just let her dog back into the house and was closing the rear sliding glass of the residence in the 200 block of Chadwick Way when a man grabbed her from behind and forced her inside around 10:55 p.m., Lt. Scott Przekurat said.

The woman described the suspect as a large male based on the sound of his voice, but she did not see him because he pulled her shirt over her head in the bathroom, Przekurat said. The man held a sharp object at her throat and tried to sexually assault the woman but she screamed and fought back, Przekurat said.

The suspect then fled the residence and the woman went to a neighbor’s home and called police. Police did not find the suspect during a thorough search of the neighborhood. She was treated at a hospital and police collected physical evidence possibly containing the suspect’s DNA, Przekurat said.
