Two Albuquerque police officers and a Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy were shot and the suspect killed Saturday during a wild string of shootouts stretching from downtown Albuquerque to the North Valley.
Local media reports that the police officers were lured into an ambush by a gunman armed with an assault rifle. After the officers were shot, the gunman fled in a police car and was pursued by police and sheriff’s deputies.
The gunman then shot the sheriff’s deputy during the chase before he was killed by return fire.
It has been a particularly violent week for New Mexico law enforcement officers. On Monday a gunman wounded a State Police officer in the leg near Roswell, and late Thursday another state officer took a bullet to his stomach during a raid in Española. Return fired killed the suspects in both incidents.
The officer shot near Roswell has been released from a hospital while the officer shot in Española remains hospitalized.
A Roswell Police Department officer directing traffic near Monday’s shooting scenes suffered critical injuries when he was hit by a car.
