A 17-year-old boy charged today with killing his mother in their apartment Wednesday afternoon will be tried as an adult, Solano County District Attorney Donald du Bain said today. Kulunda Ojuno Kennard did not enter a plea at his arraignment this afternoon in Solano County Superior Court.
His next court date is Nov. 1. The murder complaint that also alleges Kennard personally discharged a firearm, du Bain said. The teen faces a maximum term of 50 years to life if convicted of the charges, du Bain said. Kennard was arrested Wednesday for the gunshot slaying of Shauntanae Lashauna Brown, 35, in apartment G-6 at the Marina Vista apartment complex at 201 Maine St., Vallejo police Lt. Sid DeJesus said. Police responded around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday after receiving multiple 911 calls about gunfire inside the apartment, DeJesus said.
Police officers found a security guard detaining Kennard in the manager’s office. Brown’s body and the gun were found inside the apartment, DeJesus said. It is the city’s 19th homicide this year. “We’re unsure of the motive and we are trying to establish what took place that led to these tragic circumstances,” DeJesus said. There have not been any previous calls for police at the apartment, DeJesus said. The teen’s father lives in San Francisco and the boy has other siblings.
