Investigators are trying to locate a driver who shot another motorist in Fremont early this morning after a highway road-rage incident, a police spokeswoman said.”Two drivers engaged in some type of confrontation or road rage on Highway 680,” police Officer Geneva Bosques said. The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on southbound I-680. Both drivers exited at Mission Boulevard and turned right onto Brown Road, and one driver fired a gun at the other car, hitting the driver, Bosques said.

The shooter then fled and has not been located. The victim, a 59-year-old Pleasanton man, managed to drive several blocks and stopped near the East West Bank at 44615 Mission Blvd., she said. He had suffered at least one gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to a hospital, Bosques said. His wounds are considered serious but he is expected to survive.”We hope to have a further update on him later today,” she said.

The victim’s dog, a German shepherd, was in the backseat of the car at the time of the shooting but was unhurt and was taken to the Tri-Valley Animal Rescue shelter, Bosques said.Bosques said it remains unclear what exactly happened on the highway, but that the confrontation may have started because the suspect thought the victim was driving too slowly.”We’re still waiting to interview him more extensively today,” she said of the victim.
She said it is possible both the suspect and the victim were acting aggressively.”We strongly recommend that if people start to see themselves getting involved in a situation of road rage, they quickly do whatever they can to de-escalate the situation … You never know the state of mind or what the other driver is capable of,” Bosques said.
