A dozen work/commercial pickup trucks and vans that typically contain valuable tools have been stolen in Benicia during the past two months, a police lieutenant said today. The majority of the thefts have been Ford F-250 and F-350 pickups and E class vans, Lt. Frank Hartig said.

Many of the trucks had utility boxes mounted to the bed of the truck and belong to contracting or commercial businesses, Hartig said. Several trucks were owned by private parties but had large tool boxes in the bed of the truck, Hartig said. Some of the trucks and vans have been recovered in nearby cities without the tools or materials, and some were partially stripped, Hartig said.

Police are advising truck and van owners to buy security devices to deter thefts. These include steering wheel and brake pedal locks. “It is also advised to park the vehicle in a well-lit area, or have motion detection lights directed at the vehicle,” Hartig said.
