A couple was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint outside their apartment in Salinas early this morning, according to police. At about 1:30 a.m., a 69-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man were returning home in the 700 block of East Romie Lane when two men confronted them as they walked from the parking lot to their apartment, police said. One of the men pointed a gun at the couple and demanded their money, according to police.
The male victim told the suspect that he had no money. One of the suspects then punched the victim in the face multiple times. When the victim fell to the ground, the suspect kicked him, police said. The other suspect grabbed the woman’s purse, and both suspects then ran through the parking lot and continued west on East Romie Lane. As the suspects were running away, one bumped into a parked car and dropped his gun.
Officers later determined that it was not a real firearm, according to police. The male victim was treated for minor injuries, and the woman was unhurt. Both suspects were described as Hispanic men in their late 20s, standing about 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing about 150 to 170 pounds, police said. The suspect with the gun had a black bandana over his face. Both suspects were wearing dark clothing.
